Aurukun riots linked to Palm Island
Aboriginal leaders are predicting there will be more trouble in Queensland Indigenous communities despite calls for calm.
The Queensland Police Union insists its officers at Aurukun on Cape York did nothing wrong in yesterday's riots.
Acting Premier Anna Bligh says she hopes the riots on Aurukun will not spread to other Indigenous communities.
She says riots are unacceptable no matter what the circumstances, but she admits the Aurukun incident shows the level of confidence in police has declined.
Gulf Aboriginal leader Murrandoo Yanner says that is a understatement.
"It's a fallout from the Palm Island affair basically," he said.
He says no Aborigine in Queensland trusts the State Government or the legal system.
"It is the failure of the justice system that has led to this sort of mistrust in general by Aboriginal people across Queensland of the police and it leads to these sorts of incidents," he said.
Acting Police Commissioner Dick Conder says a high police presence will remain at Aurukun until further notice.
"At the present time there is approximately 30 police officers in Aurukun until such time as the community settles down again," he said.
The Police Union says it is confident the officers involved will be cleared by an investigation.
The union's Sergeant Denis Fitzpatrick says there are no similarities between the Aurukun riot and the death in custody case on Palm Island.
"The only similarity is that there's an angry mob of Aboriginals that have cause(d) damage to a police station and in this instance they have caused damage to other parts of the community, and there has been a considerable amount of rioting with about 300 persons involved."
